| SHFOTM has moved to the Old Log Exhibit Hall on the Sam Houston Museum grounds, and is (AKA Music Building) at the Sam Houston State University. The museum is located Hunstville, TX, and there is plenty of room for jamming. |
|
The SHFOTM is no longer hosting the monthly concerts due to poor attendance, But the jamming is still in full swing, so grab your instrument and come join us for the jam! |
Jamming starts at 4:00pm and goes until everyone is too tired.
| Q: What is SAM HOUSTON'S FRIENDS OF
TRADITIONAL MUSIC ("SHFOTM")? A: SHFOTM is a non-profit corporation organized to encourage the playing, singing, dancing and listening of traditional acoustic music from American history. We mainly play "old time" fiddle music from the Appalachian mountain region, but also Bluegrass, Celtic, Cajun, Blues, Old Country, Cowboy, sea chanteys, gospel singing, and shape note singing. We frequently play for contra dances around the area. |
Q: Where does SHFOTM
meet? |
| Q: Who is No Foolin'? A: No Foolin' is the group of people from SHFOTM who periodically "perform" (note we use that term loosely) for community events, for dances, and at Civil War reenactments. If you're interested in joining, come to a jam or visit the web page linked above. |
Q: I can't wait, when
does SHFOTM get together? |
| Q: HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? A: NOTHING! But donations are appreciated. SHFOTM has some administration cost-mailing, phone calls, advertising. |
| Q: Is there only one Jam session? A: Generally, yes. But we love to play different types of music, so when it's your turn to pick a tune, you are more than welcome to pick your favorite genre (as long as it has to do with traditional music). |
| Q: What overnight accommodations are
available? A: There are a number of hotels and motels in the area. The SHSU University Hotel is a real bargain. Also, there is camping at the Huntsville State Park, a few miles outside town. RV's are restricted to the parking lot. Or you can get real friendly with someone from Huntsville! |
Q: How about food? |
| Q: Is alcohol allowed? A: No, this is not allowed on the SHSU campus, so any alcohol will be poured down your sound hole. |
| Q: Who can I contact for more
information? A: Mike McManus at 936-293-8359 or at mmcmanus100@yahoo.com |
| Q: What are the dates
for SHFOTM jams? A: SHFOTM is held every first Saturday of the month. Sometimes there are events that coincide with the jam or events prior to the jam. Since this web page is being rebuilt, the best way to find out is to contact Mike McManus at 936-293-8359 or at mmcmanus100@yahoo.com. |
